"A New 'No-Man's-Land': Guantánamo from Both Sides"
Google Meet: Register here
In A New No-Man's-Land, Brown University Professor Esther Whitfield explores Guantánamo not as a symbol of US power, but as a coherent region. Using a multilingual archive of sources from both the base and surrounding Cuban communities, Whitfield reveals a place where Cuban and American worlds press up against each other and where similar experiences of isolation create unexpected common ground.
This virtual book talk will feature Whitfield in conversation with Jorge Núñez, Former President of UNEAC Guantánamo, participating live from Cuba. Join CASA Cuba for a rich discussion of the book, the borderland, and what Guantánamo means for the region, and the world.

"From Havana to the World: CASA Cuba Alumni and Scholars on Research Across Borders"
Google Meet: Register here
Two students who studied during the spring semester in Havana have already returned to further research projects begun with CASA Cuba. Jaimee Martin is interested in how Black trans people in Havana use mutual aid and international trans solidarity to build collective power. Bennett Lacerte is following up on questions of food sovereignty and urban farming. Another former student, Sasha Gilles, turned their CASA Cuba experience into a PhD and years of cross-border research and collaboration.
These students will present snapshots of their projects and be in conversation with faculty from Cuba, the United States, and Australia. Faculty commentators include Zuleica Romay (Casa de las Américas), Reinaldo Funes (Fundación Antonio Núñez Jiménez), Daniel Rodriguez (Brown University), and Adrian Hearn (University of Melbourne). Join us for a live virtual panel about what research in and on Cuba really looks like, and what becomes possible when you start in Havana!
