Academics

Universitat Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona, SpainThe CASA-Barcelona program offers students an unmatched opportunity to hone their Spanish skills while studying alongside local students at four premier universities in the city. Students from all academic disciplines who have completed a minimum of six semesters of college-level Spanish (or the equivalent), as well as students who have not reached the six-semester Spanish level, but have completed a combination of at least intermediate/advanced Spanish and some Catalan coursework are all eligible to apply.

Participants must take a combination of courses offered through CASA-Barcelona and the associated universities. All students take a CASA Pro-seminar at the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), which consists of individual modules that focus on the Spanish and Catalan languages, history and culture of Catalonia and Spain, and a research project or internship. Students participate in academic and cultural activities throughout the semester as part of the Pro-seminar (visits to museums, conferences, study trips and workshops). In addition to the Pro-seminar, students take one of several selected courses at the Universitat de Barcelona (UB), taught by the resident director or a professor from a local partner university, or a CASA course taught by a visiting professor from a CASA consortium university. Students complete their course selection with other direct-enrollment courses taken at one or more of four local universities in Barcelona, which offer a wide range of subjects taught in Spanish and/or Catalan.
